Inktober Day 15 – Raven

It comes in a set and is really inexpensive, but outside of my tiny detail brushes it has become my workhorse this year. Thanks to the Inktober Artsnacks box and previous Artsnacks boxes I now have a couple of very nice paintbrushes and one very expensive ($30) sable-haired brush.. these feel way too precious for playing in ink and I haven’t wanted to use them at all this month.
BRING IN THE GRACE ART SET! The price is right and the shape of the smallest round brush just feels really good in my hand. I guess the point I am trying to make is that they don’t feel precious thanks to their price point, and that they are just a very decent set for learning with.

Inktober Day 13 – Pumpkin Pie Spice

[cs_content][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]Drew these whole spice bits to scan into the comp and make into a repeating pattern for the inside of a book cover 🙂 Might also make them into a tiling background. Similar to the milkshake recipe post, these were done with microns for steadier line thickness.

If you’re curious, the spices drawn are ginger root, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon sticks and allspice berries, and the recipe is:

Pumpkin Pie Spice
3 TB Ground cinnamon
2 tsp Ground ginger
2 tsp Ground nutmeg
1½ tsp Ground allspice
1½ tsp Ground cloves

Just mix all spices together and store in an airtight jar or spice container.

Inktober Day 12 – Jack O’ Lantern Stack

Piece was done as a kind of demonstration for myself of how I handle the different pens. Probably should have made it into a whole jack o’ lantern totem pole and brought in the dip pen, paint brush and markers 😛 Maybe I will do a page of pumpkins for that later. Really loving drawing pumpkins right now if you haven’t noticed hehe 🙂

My 3 gray Prismacolor markers officially died on this pic 🙁 Sad day! Interesting that they all died at the same time, but not too surprising since they were mostly used for backgrounds like this anyhow.

On the plus side, I do believe I am figuring out how to upload non-ruined pictures into wordpress. Hooray!

Inktober Day 11 – Pumpkin Pie Milk Shake

Eventually I’d like to fully illustrate a hand-me-down, handwritten cook book and this turned into a sort of practice for that.

Done with all microns for better line control. Recipe is this one from Closet Cooking, if you’re interested in making your own. And it is the bomb 🙂

Inktober Day 7 – Tea Bear

[cs_content][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]So if I had to pick a theme for my Inktober so far based off of what has already been drawn by me this month I’d say “animals and plants” at this point. But really from a day-to-day perspective it’s just what strikes the fancy when I sit down to get a sketch out. And perhaps picking a prompt would have tied everything together, but then you definitely wouldn’t have gotten this video of me drinking tea while inking a drawing of a bear drinking tea.

That tea (Moonlight Sonata cake by Whispering Pines Tea Company) is both one of the most beautiful cakes of pressed tea I have ever seen, as well as being absolutely delicous. Though it has kind of gone through phases since I bought it back in March, as when it first arrived it was just a really nice tea. Nothing remarkable stood out so much. Then 3 months later that SAME cake smelled and tasted like INSANELY STRONG dill. So weird! And by god was that a pleasantly odd drink for a dill-lover such as myself 🙂
But now it has really mellowed out and there is just the slightest hint of dill flavor at the back of what is an extremely drinkable tea.

But back to the subject of drawing, after this weekend I am planning on doing some pictures that are waaaaay outside of my comfort zone. Interior drawing and some backgrounds, some ink washes (scary!). There will still be animals and plants in those pics, though, I’ll be honest.

Hopefully more frequent videos to come, but technical difficulties abound and this might be more of a working-out-the-kinks month 🙂

Inktober Day 6 – Spring Deer

Originally I had wanted to do all 31 drawings in my new Inktober-branded sketchbook that came with the Artsnacks collection, but it cannot be helped.. I just love using different papers too much 🙂

And after having drawn with newer-to-me materials mostly this month it felt like I had SO much more line control going back to just felt tips for this piece. Don’t get me wrong, the dip pen and brushes have sent me over the moon and they will be in my life forever. But you just can’t beat the feeling of effortlessly clean lines sometimes!
