Artsnacks 2016 InkTober Collection Review

[cs_content][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]So quick disclosure: This “collection box” was bought with money from my pocket, I am in no way affiliated with Artsnacks or any of the brands mentioned and was not provided with anything I am reviewing today, nor was I asked to give my review. All opinions are my own.

What is Artsnacks?

Artsnacks is a subscription box service that mails subscribers a box with a few art supplies in it once a month. They also sell “Collection” boxes which are independent from their monthly subscription service and are a more expensive one-time fee per box. The collection boxes contain more products and usually follow a theme (such as ink drawing tools for Inktober!). For more information on Artsnacks or to purchase the Inktober collection box, head on over to Artsnacks.co.

What is InkTober?

Inktober is a 31-day drawing challenge that runs in October and was founded by one of my favorite artists, Jake Parker. The challenge is simply to draw something daily using ink, pretty simple πŸ™‚ For more information on Inktober, you can check out Inktober.com!

Denik Spiral-Bound Sketchbook

sketchbookMy first impression of Denik’s sketchbooks was from one of their perfect-bound books and I wasn’t happy with that one. Based off of that first assessment I started into this book with a cautious optimism, and honestly was really not disappointed.
The paper is extremely smooth to the touch, which I prefer for books I am expecting to put a lot of ink on. The pages are also nice and thick, and there is very little bleed through when using the supplies sent in the InkTober box. Actually, unless I was literally painting the page black with the sumi ink or when using alcohol markers (Copics, Prismacolors etc), there was no bleed through at all.
According to the “menu” that comes with the collection, this sketchbook has 124# paper and retails for $18. At the time of this writing it is nowhere to be found on Denik’s site though. If they do add them to the site eventually, I would definitely buy a second sketchbook after finishing this one. It really is very nice for inks. You can check out Denik’s site here.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]

Dip PenΒ (Nib Holder*, Cartoonist Nibs*, Sumi Ink*)

Drawing of pen nib, nib holder and ink bottleSo these I am going to review as one. And to put it simply, I love them, will absolutely be getting more nibs when these wear down and more ink when this is used up. The collection comes with a set of 3 nibs and 60mL of ink though, so that wont be very soon! The nib holder is comfortable to hold for long inking sessions thanks to the squishy grip. The ink dries quickly when it isn’t piled on the paper and did not feather, bleed or smudge even when I used alcohol marker on it.
The best part though, is just how DELICATE a line the nib lays out! It is so much easier doing tiny details the way I like to with this thing. And the nibs have just enough flex that I can get some line variation in, too, without having to switch tools.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]

Princeton Kolinsky Sable Short Handle Brush (#4)*

Drawing of a Princeton Kolinsky Sable Paint BrushOkay, so this was the low point of the box for me. NOT because this is a bad brush, no, it is a very nice paint brush.
BUT.
The price point got into my head!
It’s too expensive to experiment with. Now, I DID use it with the ink, but wound up switching to my much cheaper Grace Art paintbrush* for most things because the last thing I wanted to be doing with a $30 real fur paint brush is actually use the thing to experiment with a medium I am still extremely new to! It just felt like a huge waste of that brush’s potential, and so it was hardly used in comparison to my cheapie brush.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]

Copic Multiliner SP (0.5)*

Drawing of a Copic Multiliner SP felt tip penNot much to report here, felt tip pens are my every day go-to for inking so I already have a set of Microns. It was nice to try out a brand I hadn’t used, but there was very little difference between this pen and my regulars. No feathering or bleeding, once dry the ink doesn’t smudge when used with alcohol markers. These seem like good pens.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen*

Drawing of the Pentel Pocket Brush PenI already own 2 of these, if that tells you anything πŸ™‚ Having 3 doesn’t bother me at all, this pen makes lineart FUN and was my first introduction to non-felt-tip pens. Before finding artists like Jake Parker, Joverine and Anthony Holden that are crazy inspiring and make using this pen look easy, I was always afraid of brushes and ink. This has been a great introductory brush pen and I very highly recommend it if you are someone interested in trying out brushes. It even comes with an extra ink cartridge, so you don’t have to feel the need to be super precious using it.
I will say, despite having 3 of these I am still using the first brush I bought 4 or 5 years ago and the bristles are still going strong. The second brush I bought for the refill cartridges and now I have 2 more refills thanks to the InkTober box![/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]My final thoughts on this box are mostly positive! If I could go back in time, would I still get it had I known what was in it when I preordered it? Yes, absolutely. I didn’t preorder hoping for some deep discounts, bargains or anything like that. I wanted a box of relevant art supplies curated by an artist I respect. And in that sense I am 100% pleased!
Were there a few let downs? An eensy bit, yeah. Firstly, I would have liked more pens πŸ˜› Second, the paint brush was a nice touch, but as a newbie to paint brush inking I had an impossible time trying to make myself use it thanks to the crazy price point for something that is essentially a beginner tool for me. If they were to ask me how it could have been improved I would say scrap the $30 brush for a $10 brush (which would still be a really decent paint brush!), and toss in a couple more pens of different types. Maybe a marker or something like the Pentel Aquash Pigment Ink brush pen.

In closing, I still highly recomend the box if you’re interested in these supplies. It’s a great mix of things to try![/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section bg_color=”hsla(43, 7%, 93%, 0.77)” parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 0px;color: #fff;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 10px auto 0px;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 10px 0px 0px;”][cs_text title=”Copy of Copy of undefined” style=”color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.5);font-size: .9em;”]This post includes affiliate links (indicated by an asterisk). Inktober 2016 Tools

[cs_content][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]At the beginning of Inktober I was really hoping I would stick to just the tools included in the Inktober Artsnacks box, but that didn’t happen haha. Here is a quick overview of some of the inking tools that I used the most over the challenge. Other than maybe the No. 7, there isn’t anything too crazy in my lineup πŸ™‚

Since I already had a bit of a collection of inking tools to use I figured rather than make this list beforehand and try to guess what I would be using all month or being very strict with my materials, that I would throw this list together afterwards. These are not ALL that I used, but just what got used the most.

Went ahead and drew a different pumpkin with each tool to show off their line quality.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” class=”cs-ta-justify” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”thumbnail” src=”http://hellolittlewolf.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/microns.jpg” alt=”” link=”true” href=”http://hellolittlewolf.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/microns.jpg” title=”” target=”blank” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=””][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”2/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]

Micron Pens*

My first “serious” ink pens. These felt-tipped pens get used in almost all of my pieces because they give me a lot of tight line control and all of the different sizes make varying my line thickness much easier. Almost all of the little, tiny lines in my pictures can usually be traced back to these, with my 005 being the most used of the set for all super small details.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”2/3″ class=”cs-ta-justify” style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]

Dip PenΒ (Nib Holder* and Cartoonist Nibs*)

My newest and most interesting inking aquisition! In the past I have only ever used dip pens for journaling, most of my old nibs are all very flexible, so I wouldn’t have thought I would be seeing my most fine lines ever coming from one of these. It blew me away pretty hard to see the line variance I could get from the Cartoonist nibs, mainly just how TINY my lines are with this.

I’ve been using Sumi ink with the dip pen and have no complaints. The ink dries quickly when I don’t pile it onto the paper and when it is completely dry it hasn’t smudged or run when used with other wet media like Copic markers or ink washes.[/cs_text][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”thumbnail” src=”http://hellolittlewolf.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/dippen.jpg” alt=”” link=”true” href=”http://hellolittlewolf.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/dippen.jpg” title=”” target=”blank” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=””][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”thumbnail” src=”http://hellolittlewolf.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/pentelpocketbrush.jpg” alt=”” link=”true” href=”http://hellolittlewolf.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/pentelpocketbrush.jpg” title=”” target=”blank” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=””][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”2/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen*

Pretty much my favorite pen of all time. Been using this pen for about 5 years now and I adore it. AND I am still using my original pen bought 5 years ago, since you can get new ink cartridges for these. This brush pen has withstood a lot of abuse from me and has held up very well. Love the ink in this since for the amount of ink that gets put down onto the paper it still dries reasonably quickly and without smudging after it is completely dry.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”2/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]

Kuretake No. 7 Brush Pen*

It is called a brush pen, but it is really a felt-tipped marker. That being said, it was easily my second-most used pen this month. Laying down thin lines is easy with the nice point the tip comes to and the felt tip actually made this feel like a much easier version of a brush pen. It has a lot more line control, so I don’t get the somewhat unsteady-looking lines that the Pentel brush pen gives me and everything is very smooth.[/cs_text][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”thumbnail” src=”http://hellolittlewolf.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/no7.jpg” alt=”” link=”true” href=”http://hellolittlewolf.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/no7.jpg” title=”” target=”blank” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=””][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”thumbnail” src=”http://hellolittlewolf.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/hybridtechnica.jpg” alt=”” link=”true” href=”http://hellolittlewolf.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/hybridtechnica.jpg” title=”” target=”blank” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=””][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”2/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]

Hybrid Technica Gel Pen*

Surprisingly great for fine details, but for line variance you’ll of course have to go over something a few times. So this mostly gets used when I am looking for really thin and uniform lines, since felt tips are squishy and the give some amount of line variance that I am not always looking for.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”2/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]

Paint Brushes

Another first for me this past month was using paint brushes to ink with. And I have to say for me personally, I could take or leave it. There are a few cartoonist brushes I would very much like to try out still, but as for the brush I was using this month.. eh. I’d rather use the brush pen and not have to dip. I am also pretty sure I ruined a $30 sable brush trying to get all of the ink out of the bristles πŸ˜› Boo.

I will be sticking with my cheaper Grace Art brushes* from now on for inking until I get a brush specifically built for it.[/cs_text][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”thumbnail” src=”http://hellolittlewolf.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/paintbrush.jpg” alt=”” link=”true” href=”http://hellolittlewolf.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/paintbrush.jpg” title=”” target=”blank” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=””][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section bg_color=”hsla(43, 7%, 93%, 0.77)” parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 0px;color: #fff;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 10px auto 0px;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 10px 0px 0px;”][cs_text title=”Copy of Copy of undefined” style=”color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.5);font-size: .9em;”]This post includes affiliate links (indicated by an asterisk). Inktober Day 28 – Witch Mercy

[cs_content][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]The character in this Inktober drawing is Mercy from the game Overwatch in her cute little witch halloween costume πŸ™‚ Next to Junkrat she is my favorite character if we go by character design alone, but I am absolutely a Mercy main! If anyone reading this plays and would like a Quickplay healer, feel free to add my bnet tag: Militia#1928 πŸ˜€

This was a ton of fun, and I stuck with the Microns this time to play it safe since I was inking small details in a small (5×8″) sketchbook. Hopefully I will come up with a different recording setup soon though, since a bit of this did end up getting cut out due to me sticking my head in the video LOL. I have a habit of leaning far forward and getting right up on top of my drawings when I am trying to be extra careful (like drawing faces), and recording on my coffee table makes that a leeeettle difficult.

Pumpkin added for festiveness πŸ˜€ Happy Halloween ya’ll!

Thanks to the Inktober Artsnacks box and previous Artsnacks boxes I now have a couple of very nice paintbrushes and one very expensive ($30) sable-haired brush.. these feel way too precious for playing in ink and I haven’t wanted to use them at all this month.
BRING IN THE GRACE ART SET! The price is right and the shape of the smallest round brush just feels really good in my hand. I guess the point I am trying to make is that they don’t feel precious thanks to their price point, and that they are just a very decent set for learning with.

Inktober Day 13 – Pumpkin Pie Spice

[cs_content][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]Drew these whole spice bits to scan into the comp and make into a repeating pattern for the inside of a book cover πŸ™‚ Might also make them into a tiling background. Similar to the milkshake recipe post, these were done with microns for steadier line thickness.

If you’re curious, the spices drawn are ginger root, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon sticks and allspice berries, and the recipe is:

Pumpkin Pie Spice
3 TB Ground cinnamon
2 tsp Ground ginger
2 tsp Ground nutmeg
1Β½ tsp Ground allspice
1Β½ tsp Ground cloves

Just mix all spices together and store in an airtight jar or spice container.

Inktober Day 12 – Jack O’ Lantern Stack

[cs_content][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]The top pumpkin’s lines were done with the Pentel Brush Pen, middle using the Kuretake No. 7 Brush Pen and bottom was done in Microns. Piece was done as a kind of demonstration for myself of how I handle the different pens. Probably should have made it into a whole jack o’ lantern totem pole and brought in the dip pen, paint brush and markers πŸ˜› Maybe I will do a page of pumpkins for that later. Really loving drawing pumpkins right now if you haven’t noticed hehe πŸ™‚

My 3 gray Prismacolor markers officially died on this pic πŸ™ Sad day! Interesting that they all died at the same time, but not too surprising since they were mostly used for backgrounds like this anyhow.

On the plus side, I do believe I am figuring out how to upload non-ruined pictures into wordpress. Hooray!

Inktober Day 11 – Pumpkin Pie Milk Shake

[cs_content][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]One of my husband’s favorite foods is pumpkin pie milkshake, usually specifically bought from a Burgerville, but he enjoys a recipe I found online for it too. Eventually I’d like to fully illustrate a hand-me-down, handwritten cook book and this turned into a sort of practice for that.

Done with all microns for better line control. Recipe is this one from Closet Cooking, if you’re interested in making your own. And it is the bomb πŸ™‚
